When most people think of visiting a site of our nation's history, they think of Boston and take the Freedom Trail or they take a tour of the monuments in Washington D.C. However, by going to the Ozark folk center, nestled near the Buffalo national river in the Ozark mountains in Arkansas, tourists can glimpse another side of American history.
The Ozark folk center provides living history of the Ozark mountains, focusing on crafts and music from the region.
A prominent feature of the Ozark folk center is the crafts area. Twenty-four buildings and outdoor areas near the Buffalo National River host crafts and other activities spanning from the period of 1820 to 1920. In these buildings, workers demonstrate crafts which include basket making, blacksmithing, candle making, broom, jewelry and doll making. Other popular hands-on crafts include pottery, quilting, spinning, weaving, wood carving and more. The Ozark folk center also offers craft apprenticeships and workshops for experienced of inexperienced visitors. A great time to visit the Ozark folk center is at the end of March, when the center hosts a week of study of the old-time crafts.
Folk music, central to the Ozark mountain way of life, is part of the daily calendar of the Ozark folk center. The tunes of the banjo and fiddle create a portal for people to travel to the time of the pioneers, when life was hard and melody offered solace. This music is also graced by guitars, mandolins, dulcimers, autoharps and more. Each year, the Ozark folk center hosts concerts including the Dulcimer Jamboree, Folk Dance Days, String Band Week and the Autoharp Jamboree. Other big Ozark Folk Center musical events include the State Old Time Fiddle Contest and the American Roots Music Concert Series, which features old and new folk music. More than just giving visitors an earful however, the Ozark folk center holds workshops and gives learning experiences to those who want a non-competitive, relaxed learning atmosphere.
The Ozark folk center can remind Americans of a slower time in history, when down home cooking, labor intensive crafts and the sweet-singing fiddle were a way of life. Visitors can also spend time shopping in the Ozark Folk Center gift shop. At the gift shop, they can purchase some of the handmade crafts, books, recordings, clothing and food. The craft and music centers are open through the end of October and the lodge is open all year round. Booking a vacation at the Ozark folk center is a great way to forget about the stresses of modern life and relax in the scenic Arkansas.
