Thought by many to be one entity, the Ozark National Forest is actually comprised of two separate woodlands: Ozark National Forest and Saint Francis Forest. The latter is much smaller, boasting almost 23,000 acres of wooded land. The Saint Francis Forest runs along the Mississippi River, in the eastern part of Arkansas. Although Saint Francis Forest lacks the recreational activities the Ozark National Forest has, it is a well known haven for fishing. There are two expansive lakes, Beer Creek and Storm Creek, which are habitats for many species of fish. Any fishing fanatic is prime to catch large mouth bass, red-eyed bream and channel catfish on a given trip. Although Saint Francis Forest is small in comparison to the Ozark, the abundance of trees, vegetation and wildlife is sure to keep any audience captive.

Located primarily in the Ozark Mountains, this wooded wonderland is home to over 500 species of trees and plants. Camping can be done nearly anywhere desired in the Ozark National Forest, with the small exception of the areas marked off by signs. For those preparing to camp primitively, it can be done by tent or sleeping bag. For visitors to the Ozark National Forest looking for more protection, RVs, trailers, pick up trucks and vans are welcome. There are some concessions within the campsites, and water is most readily available. Many of the campsites do not require fees, however, those that do range from $3 to $35 per day. For vacationers less interested in camping, there are Lake Weddington lodges and White Rock cabins on location.

Boasting almost 400 miles of hiking trails, the Ozark National Forest is unparalleled for this adventurous vacation activity. These trails wind through the mountains, where small waterfalls can be seen frequently. There is a 120 foot natural bridge in one area of the hiking trails, as well as many streams and rock outcrops. The hiking trails are situated among the wildlife; white tailed deer graze the woods and squirrels rampantly scurry along the paths.
